Puri, home to the Jagganath Temple, hosts the annual Rath Yatra (festival of chariots). The deities of the Jagannath Temple, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, with the celestial wheel- Sudarshana Chakra are removed from the temple in a ceremonial procession to their chariots. The colourfully decorated chariots are drawn on the Bada Danda or Grand Road to the Gundicha Temple.

With over two million visitors in a single week during the Rath Yatra festival, the temple corridor project addresses the most urgent issues facing the holy site: encroachment and accessibility for pilgrims. The Master Plan envisions a 25-acre pedestrianized area, featuring facilities such as a library, visitor center, botanical gardens, and shelter pavilions. Drawing inspiration from the original temple structure, the design respects the site’s heritage while incorporating modern advancements.
